Rocker sole modification: change rollover with care.
Wonderwalk assesses rocker-sole footwear for people who need easier rollover or less movement or pressure at a selected area. We normally recommend a suitable shoe with a rocker already built in, then consider modifying footwear when an appropriate ready-made option is not available.
Does a stiff ankle, painful big-toe joint or sensitive forefoot make it difficult to roll forward through each step?
01
What a rocker changes
The curved sole moves the rollover point of the shoe. This can reduce the amount of motion needed at a stiff ankle or toe joint, or shift pressure away from a selected forefoot area. The rocker position must match the person's gait and clinical objective.
02
Why we usually start with a ready-made rocker shoe
A shoe designed with a rocker already built in gives us a known shape and construction. We assess fit, balance and walking in that option first. Modification is considered when the available shoes do not meet the required objective.
03
When modification is appropriate
We inspect the shoe, observe walking and review the intended unloading or rollover goal. If the footwear is suitable, the modification is planned for that shoe and patient, followed by fitting and walking review.

Questions about a case
Do you modify every shoe that needs a rocker?
No. Wonderwalk normally begins by recommending a suitable shoe with a rocker sole already built in.
When would you modify the patient's own shoe?
Modification is considered when a ready-made rocker shoe is not suitable or does not meet the required rollover or pressure objective, and the patient's shoe can safely accept the change.
What should a healthcare professional send?
Send the footwear objective, the area or joint to be unloaded and any relevant restrictions. The patient should bring the shoes for assessment.
